Car and Driver Takes the 2018 BMW M550i xDrive for a Spin
A writer from Car and Driver recently had the extreme good fortune to take the 2018 BMW 550i xDrive for a trip on the A8 autobahn in Germany, and he took full advantage of the opportunity to open the throttle wide and experience the full unleashed power of the 4.4-liter V8 twin-turbo engine.
Due to arrive on United States shores soon, the 2018 550i xDrive is the quickest 5 Series vehicle BMW has produced, dashing to a 0 to 60 mph time of 3.8 seconds. That 4.4-liter, DOHC V8 engine pairs with an 8-speed automatic transmission to generate a healthy 456 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque.
Comfort mode, which is the default setting, offers lighter steering, a softer-feeling suspension and a quieter sounding engine. The xDrive all-wheel drive system (also tuned to the Comfort mode), distributing torque as situations dictate, while the Adaptive M suspension offers a plush, smooth ride with minimal body roll.
The vehicle also features both Sport and Sport+ modes, which feature M-specific tuning for both the suspension and steering for even more precise handling and driving enjoyment.
Distinctive exterior styling touches include M Sport brakes that have blue-painted calipers and M badging, a small rear spoiler, black chrome M Sport quad tailpipes. Inside, you'll find illuminated "M550i xDrive" inscriptions on the door sills, an M sport steering wheel that features paddle shifters to give you manual control over gear changes, aluminum trim and pedals, multi-contour sport seats in black leather with blue contrast stitching and much more.
