Car Batteries 101
Just like your TV remote, cellphone, and almost everything else, your BMW vehicle needs a battery to start. That’s because your battery is responsible for creating the energy for electrical components for your BMW, which includes the starter. As the name suggests, the starter is what’s responsible for making your engine go.
Without a healthy battery, simply said, your BMW won’t start.
So, how long do batteries last, you’re wondering? Typically, they last somewhere between three and five years. You can always check the age of your battery by referring to the four- or five-digit code printed on the cover of your battery case. By looking at the first two components, you’ll know how old your battery is.
The first component is a letter that will correspond with the month, while the number next to it will let you know the year in which it was manufactured.
For example, if the first two digits of your code read C8, that means your battery was manufactured in March of 2018. However, if your code is J9, that means your battery was manufactured in September of 2019. In this case, the J would represent September since I is skipped, as it can often be mixed up with a 1.
