BMW i3 Earns Award at New York International Auto Show

The new BMW i3 received the very first 2017 World Urban Car award at the New York International Auto Show held last month. The award was conceived by World Car to recognize vehicles that offer a quality, value-driven mobility solution to the problem of increasingly dense cities.

The i3 features a new 94 Ah battery that has 50 percent greater capacity (33kWh), due to higher energy density in the lithium ion cells. The BMW team has endeavored to make sure that the battery's dimensions remain the same size even as it offers significantly greater range.

Launched in 2014, the i3 combines visionary design, unique architecture, dynamic performance and innovative connectivity to redefine urban mobility.

In a press release, Ludwig Willisch, Head of BMW Group Region Americas, stated, “We are delighted and honored that the BMW i3 has been recognized as the World Urban Car of the Year. This award highlights BMW Group’s commitment to sustainable mobility through BMW’s first all-electric vehicle made primarily of carbon fiber. The design brief for the BMW i3 was to create a Mega City Vehicle for the cities of the future. Today, the new 2017 BMW i3 (94 Ah) provides more range paired with a high-level of dynamic performance, making it the perfect urban vehicle for people around the world.”
