Interior Space & Amenities
Both have plenty of space for five. However, if you have a big family or are the designated carpool driver, then the 2018 BMW X5 may be more beneficial. That’s because it has an optional third row, bumping the seating capacity up to seven.
Even without the extra third row, you’ll still find a bit more room in the BMW X5. The 5-seater has 39.8 inches of front headroom and 39.8 inches of rear headroom. The 2018 Mercedes GLE350 is pretty close in space, with 38.9 inches of front headroom and 38.5 inches of rear headroom. However, even that small difference will affect your taller drivers.
Both vehicles have plenty of amenities to help keep everyone comfortable. For example, they come standard with heated front seats to stay cozy on colder nights. They both offer heated rear outboard seats, so backseat passengers can stay warm, too.
Plus, the GLE350 offers 3-zone automatic climate control. This is so the driver, front-seat, and backseat passengers can select their preferred temperature setting, so no one needs to stay too cold or too cold.
The backseat passengers might want separate temperature controls. Luckily, that’s possible in the X5 with available 4-zone automatic climate control.
To avoid a silent ride, the BMW X5 and Mercedes GLE350 have plenty of entertainment technologies. For instance, they both come standard with Bluetooth® capability to stream audio or make hands-free phone calls.
The BMW X5 also comes standard with a navigation system with a 10.2-inch touchscreen, 3D maps, and voice recognition. While the Mercedes GLE350 offers an advanced navigation system, too, you’ll have to upgrade to a higher trim level to get it.
In addition, each SUV offers a trial subscription to SiriusXM® Satellite Radio. With over 100 channels of sports, news, comedy, and commercial-free music, you’ll never run out of things to listen to. In the GLE350, the sound is crystal-clear through the available 14-speaker sound system.
However, the quality may be a bit sharper in the X5, with its optional Harman Kardon® 16-speaker sound system.
Both vehicles offer a smooth ride with powerful engines. The BMW X5 comes standard with a 3.0L 6-cylinder that delivers 302 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The Mercedes GLE350 comes standard with a 3.5L V6 that puts out 302 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque.
While their power ratings are pretty close, ride quality differs greatly. The BMW X5 is sure-footed and agile, with a tight suspension that prevents body roll from occurring. Meanwhile, there’s plenty of body lean in the GLE350, especially when aggressively tackling corners.
Fuel economy is also a bit better in the X5. This vehicle achieves an EPA-estimated 25 highway MPG, while the GLE350 pulls off an EPA-estimated 23 highway MPG. While pretty close numbers, their hybrid models really diverge from each other. The BMW hybrid gets an EPA-estimated 56 highway MPGe. The Mercedes hybrid, unfortunately, only achieves 50 highway MPGe.
Whether you get the hybrid or nonhybrid Mercedes model, you’ll need to stop more frequently to refuel. You can continue to cruise down the highway in the BMW X5.
